Speed Up your Computer With Autoruns

Sometimes your computer slows way down and it has nothing to do with malware or even hardware.  Sometimes when you start up your computer a whole host of programs will start up with windows.  These programs take up memory and if your computer does not have much then you start to run into problems.

Even computers with a good amount of memory can run slow if too many programs are starting up with windows.  Depending on which version of Windows you are running, it can slow your computer to a crawl.

To get rid of memory hogging startup programs, you can fire up Msconfig and go to the startup tab and start to remove programs from start up.  But there really are many more programs which start up that Windows never tells you about.

This is where you can use a little program called Autoruns from Microsoft TechNet.  Autoruns will break everything down and really show you everything starting with windows.  Without using this program you will never really know what is starting up.  It’s kind of like Msconfig on steroids.

You will find once you use Autoruns, you can really dig down and get rid of many things from startup.  When you start Autoruns, it will scan your computer and then list everything in startup.  You can then break in down into groups then release anything you don’t want from the windows startup.

This is one of the same tools Microsoft technical support uses when diagnosing computers for problems.  If you search you can also see things starting up which have no reference to the windows registry.

Autoruns is a great free program which is worth it to learn how to use.
